Bladder cancer surgery (cystectomy) using an innovative technique developed by Professor Guram Karazanashvili, which has significantly reduced life-threatening complications associated with this major surgical intervention.

The American Urological Association (AUA) Congress is the most prestigious scientific forum in the field, where one of the key criteria is the scientific innovation and quality of the research. Selection is based on rigorous criteria and evaluation by a highly qualified medical commission.
The acceptance of these papers — focused on innovative methods for the diagnosis and treatment of bladder and prostate cancers, two of the most prevalent diseases — is yet another clear example of Karazanashvili Robotic center’s global vision and a testament to Professor Karazanashvili’s mission to advance cutting-edge technologies for the benefit of patients.
So, what is the significance and innovation of the accepted studies, and what new possibilities do they open up for doctors and their patients?
As noted, the Congress will feature a state-of-the-art method for prostate biopsy, already implemented at Karazanashvili Robotic Center. This method has significantly improved early detection of prostate cancer while also reducing the number of unnecessary biopsies.
What is new, and what are the advantages/potential of this method?
Targeted prostate biopsy under micro-ultrasound guidance is based on:

300% enhanced imaging resolution and

precise targeting of suspicious areas.
It is performed using the ExactVu micro-ultrasound platform, developed specifically for prostate examination. The technology operates at a high frequency (29 MHz) and provides extremely high-resolution imaging, which greatly enhances the detection of suspicious prostate lesions and allows for accurate, real-time targeting. As a result, the method eliminates “blind” and unnecessary biopsies, multiple investigative procedures, and enables cancer detection in nearly 100% of cases.
As for the second scientific paper, focused on an innovative surgical technique for bladder cancer:
Radical cystectomy is the standard treatment for bladder cancer. However, it is one of the most complex and lengthy surgical procedures, with postoperative complications being the main concern.
To minimize these complications, Karazanashvili Robotic Center, under the guidance of Professor Karazanashvili, has developed and implemented a new technique – peritoneum-sparing surgery with complete extraperitonealization of the neobladder.
Using this innovative approach, life-threatening complications were reduced from 30.3% to just 5.08%.
The video demonstration of this technique was first presented at the AUA Congress back in 2018, showcasing how cystectomy is performed using this novel method.
This year, in Las Vegas, the AUA Congress will feature new data on outcomes achieved through this technique — specifically, how it significantly reduced the complications associated with large-scale surgical interventions in bladder cancer treatment.
