Colposcopy is an examination of the vagina and cervix performed using a special microscope called a colposcope. The colposcope is an endoscopic instrument that allows the doctor to closely examine the cervix and detect existing pathologies.
It is recommended to combine colposcopy with a gynecological examination and a Pap test, which is done by taking a smear from the cervix. The combined results of these two examinations provide an optimal diagnostic outcome.
If a pathology is detected during colposcopy, the doctor will, if necessary, take a small tissue sample from the affected area for biopsy. The biopsy then provides the final diagnosis (this is called a targeted biopsy). Treatment tactics are determined based on the results of the morphological study of the collected tissue.
